21 Aug Is teeth whitening for me?
Teeth can become discoloured for a number of different reasons. For example, it’s perfectly natural for discolouration to occur as you get older – the enamel (the strong outer layer of the tooth) becomes thinner with age and this can expose the dentine underneath which naturally yellows over time.
Other factors that can lead to or worsen existing tooth discolouration include:
- Certain foods and drinks. Coffee, wine, coca cola, curry, berries and tomatoes all have the potential to stain the teeth.
- Excessive fluoride. A monitored amount of fluoride offers various oral health benefits – not least helping to prevent tooth decay – but too much can lead to white spots on the teeth.
- Trauma. Damage caused to teeth in childhood or more recently can affect the development of the permanent teeth and cause discolouration.
In most cases, there is a solution for discolouration – teeth whitening.
But how do you know if this treatment is for you?
Firstly, it’s important to know that teeth whitening is not suitable for pregnant women, those with extra sensitive teeth, or men and women with existing tooth-coloured fillings, crowns or other restorations. (For the latter, teeth whitening products will not change the colour of anything that is not natural tooth, so the final result of treatment would not be satisfactory for those who are not looking to replace their restorations as well.)
Other than that, you just need to have healthy teeth and gums with a good dental hygiene routine to be able to proceed.
What can I expect?
We use the world’s best performing whitening products at Parvis Dental, called Enlighten. They are break-through products that provide the most effective results with the lowest concentrations of chemicals, ensuring a totally safe procedure.
The beginning of the process involves coming in to see one of our dentists for an initial consultation. They will take photos of your teeth, assess the health of your mouth and discuss with you what colour you would like your smile to be. They will then take an impression of your teeth so that bespoke whitening trays can be produced to match the exact shape of your mouth.
You will then receive a set of whitening trays and gel to take home. You’ll be shown how to place the gel in the trays and how to place and remove the trays in your mouth. You will also be advised when and for how long to wear the trays – this is usually overnight for two weeks. Your final treatment will be provided in the practice. Usually completely painless, it is perfectly normal to experience some tooth sensitivity during treatment.
At the end of it all, you’ll be left with the brighter, whiter smile you’ve always wanted!
